Your Pregnancy and Your Teeth
Keeping your teeth clean and healthy is not only good for your health, it is good for your babies health. Untreated dental disease are associated with lower birth weights as well as preterm birth. Good at home care is important but it is also important to visit the dentist. Between the morning sickness as well as food cravings, the bad bacteria in your mouth are given a more inviting environment to grow. These bacteria if left unchecked can cause tooth decay and gum disease. The earlier these conditions are found, the easier they are to treat. Don’t be afraid to visit the dentist during your pregnancy to keep your teeth as well as your baby healthy. Routine and necessary dental treatment has time and again been shown to be safe during pregnancy. Dental cleanings, fillings, anesthetics and even x-rays have all been shown to be safe to use during pregnancy. Unless needed, our office will delay any x-rays until after your child is born. During your visit ask questions and if you don’t feel comfortable with a certain aspect of treatment lets us know and always let us know that you are pregnant and any medications or issues you are having with your pregnancy.
