A Crown Fit for a King...or a Tooth
What is a crown? A crown is a device made to fit over an existing tooth in order to properly fit and restore the tooth to a stable and healthy structure. A crown fits over the tooth like a crown on a king or queens head.
A crown can be needed for several reasons. As we age, eating and chewing can cause teeth to begin to crack. These cracks get bigger and bigger and to prevent the tooth from breaking, a crown can be placed over the top of the tooth. The crown acts as a cast around the tooth to prevent the crack to continue to grow. A crown can also be used when a portion of the tooth has broken or if a large filling or root canal has been placed on the tooth.
Crowns can be made of many different materials based on the location of the tooth. Teeth in the front of the mouth need to look good and may not need as much strength. In this area of the mouth we tend to look at All-Ceramic, Zirconia and Porcelain fused to metal crowns. All three of these crowns are tooth colored and can be made to blend right in with the teeth around them. Teeth in the back of the mouth tend to need a crown that is stronger and the need for a perfect look may not be needed. In this area it is best to use a Full Gold, Zirconia or Porcelain Fused to metal as they tend to be strong enough to handle the tremendous biting force needing to chew food.
